About us
Objects carry what textbooks cannot
Who we are, how we work and why this museum is set up the way it is.
Objects carry what textbooks cannot
A museum's magic is presence: the actual tool, the actual letter, the actual dress, close enough to study. Our galleries are built around that magic, with labels written for curious humans rather than fellow academics.
How we got here
The collection belongs to everyone, so children enter free forever, exhibitions change with the seasons, and the hands-on room is not an afterthought.
WHAT WE DO
The work in one view
The galleries
The permanent collection, told through its best objects.
Exhibitions
Two major shows a year, borrowed and homegrown.
Learning
School visits and workshops booked out most terms.
Events and talks
Evenings with curators, makers and historians.
Venue hire
The great hall after dark, for dinners among the objects.
“A short quote from a happy client belongs here. Two or three sentences is usually enough to make the point without losing the reader.
